7 Essentials for Search Engine Optimization & Google Ranking

March 5, 2015

We’ve had the pleasure to host a few events lately with Google Canada. When you hang out with Google peeps, you don’t just get inspired—you start thinking about search engine rankings a lot more. Since nearly all of our clients care a great deal about where they show up on Google, I thought I’d write seven basic DIY steps to get the party started for you:

1. Think Of Keywords/Search Phrases You Want To Be Known

When you’re coming up with these, don’t think like an industry professional. Think like a very average person. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Got a few words/phrases? Write them down and then move on.

2. Ensure That Your Website Reflects Those Words & Search Phrases

Google suggests you website is built like a well designed library. Use proper photo tagging, key words and phrases throughout the site while ensuring that the back end of the site is legible (no gobbledygook). You can hire someone to do this for you, but just know that it’s not rocket science. Just make sure your website readable and organized including your words from step one.

3. Use Google My Business

Click the following link: Google My Business. Spend time there filling in their easy-to-follow wizard and you’ll be up on Google Maps, Google Now and Google Search in no time.

4. Create A YouTube Channel With Your Google Business Account

Do one video per week with your smartphone or tablet. When you publish it, tag it properly with the right key words (remember step one?) in the video title and description. Make sure to link your youtube channel back to your website!

5. Get A Blog On Your Site

Post interesting stuff with links to cool content. Show who you are and do posts that people want to read. Remember to include words from all-important step number one.

6. Write An Article About Your Top 5 Keywords From Step One (again)

This will help show you’re an expert. Include a well-named high resolution image to capture readers and to demonstrate that you are a credible resource. Provide this for your local papers, local bloggers and anyone who writes about your topic of interest. SEO is driven by online AND offline buzz. If you really want to succeed, provide a fun giveaway to incentivize them to link to and talk about your article.

7. Get Started On Some Simple AdWords Ads

These will help you show up easier when people search for you. Google is great and will let you run multiple keywords at the same time, so you don’t have to use the words from step one exclusively.

Here’s to leveraging the power and popularity of Google to get you some qualified leads. It’s nearly impossible to do it wrong so get messy and have fun!
